Action stations for social housing in Queensland

Housing Minister Karen Struthers said the Bligh Government is rolling out 4,038 new social housing dwellings across Queensland, with 3,000 of them to be completed by the end of this year.

“It’s action stations for social housing in Queensland. At the end of January, construction work started on 557 new dwellings,” Ms Struthers said.

“To date, 148 new projects have been signed with developers to deliver more than 1,400 dwellings and more than 60 funding agreements have been signed with not-for-profit providers to bring on 966 new social housing dwellings.

Minister Struthers’ comments follow claims by the LNP’s spokesperson for Housing that no housing had been completed in Queensland under the Nation Building Plan.

“There are some very happy social housing tenants who are now well-settled in their brand, new two-bedroom units in Oxford Street in Townsville.

“The six two-bedroom units were signed, sealed and delivered under the Nation Building Plan.

“There’s a hive of activity right around the state with building workers hard at work on our massive social housing roll-out.

“It’s a win for people who need a roof over their head and it’s a win for local builders, landscapers, electricians, plumbers, you name it,” she said.

“It’s the biggest-ever investment in social housing in Queensland,” Ms Struthers said.
