New figures show jobs growth and unemployment down in Qld

Labour Force figures released today show Queensland’s trend unemployment rate fell to 5.8 per cent last month and that nearly 3,000 new jobs were created, Treasurer Andrew Fraser said.

January’s ABS figures reveal Queensland’s unemployment figure dropped from 6.1 per cent in December to 5.8 per cent, and that an additional 2,900 jobs were created last month.

“These are promising figures and show that we’ve now had six months of jobs growth – but we must not be complacent,” Mr Fraser said.

“While we’re a step closer to our jobs target, we won’t stop working when Queensland’s unemployment challenges remain.

“We need to maintain our focus on creating more jobs.

“We’re under no illusion that we have a tough job ahead of us, but we have a plan that is building a strong Queensland by investing in the skills and infrastructure we need for the long term.

“Without our $18.2 billion building program, unemployment would be about five per cent higher than the current level.

“We have a plan to create jobs. When the opposition was asked what their jobs target was, they said zero.

“We’re committed to creating 100,000 net new jobs this term.”
