Federal Infrastructure and Transport
Minister Anthony Albanese and Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace today
announced the selection of Fulton Hogan Pty Ltd, a company with extensive
expertise in delivering large scale road projects.
"This $158 million
project is exactly what our Nation Building Program is all about. It will put
Queenslanders to work fixing an increasingly congested section of the national
road network," said Mr Albanese.
"All up, the widening of the Motorway
will create up to 740 direct and indirect jobs."
Minister Wallace said
the project, expected to be completed in the first half of 2012, would go a long
way towards easing congestion in south east Queensland.
"Today's
announcement couldn't have come at a better time, in the l ead up to the Bligh
Government's Growth Summit.
"Good governments plan for the future and
this project is all about managing growth and generating jobs. It doesn't get
much better than that," Mr Wallace said.
"With 2,000 people moving to
Queensland each week, it's important to plan for the future, to build better
infrastructure and to come up with sensible, workable solutions so that
Queensland can continue to thrive.
"That's what this project is all
about. It's also about improving road safety for motorists," he said.
Concrete barriers will be erected to separate oncoming traffic and
motorists will travel on a new, stronger road surface.
"We will also
lengthen the on and off-ramps at the Worongary interchange and install better
lighting and improved drainage," said Mr Wallace.
"It's the latest stage
in the $420 million commitment from both the Rudd and Bligh Labor government to
upgrade a key section of the Motorway between Coo mera and Varsity Lakes."
The upgrade of the Nerang South Interchange was completed in August
2009, with the Mudgeeraba Interchange upgrade expected to be completed by the
middle of the year and the Varsity Lakes Interchange upgrade by late 2010.
