The Bowen Show is going climate smart thanks to the Bligh Government’s Low Carbon Diet, as part of more than $300,000 worth of community grants to cut greenhouse gas emissions in Round Four of the $1 million program.

Climate Change and Sustainability Minister Kate Jones said the Bowen Pastoral Agricultural Association had received $9,900 to transform the annual show into a climate smart event.

Activities will include a children’s Green Brick Road adventure program, displays and demonstrations of climate smart behaviours and skills, and promotion of the Low Carbon Diet to visitors.

The association is one of 33 organisations statewide to benefit from the funding that is part of the Queensland Government’s commitment to reduce the state’s carbon footprint.

“These grants will allow community groups to save money, energy and greenhouse gas emissions, and encourage other individuals to do the same,” Ms Jones said.

“Three previous funding rounds have been completed since early 2009, and we estimate that by the time these final community groups finish their projects in May 2010, Queenslanders will have cut an estimated 1.57 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

“Almost 74,000 Queensland families and householders have directly participated in the program, including today’s successful applicants, and discovered the simple lifestyle changes that collectively make a real difference to our environment.”

Ms Jones said the strength of the program was that it allowed organisations of all shapes and from all walks of life to be involved in combating climate change.

“As part of the Queensland Government’s Toward Q2 vision we have set the ambitious target of cutting Queensland’s carbon footprint by one-third by 2020,” she said.

“Queenslanders are keen to play their part in addressing climate change and programs like this one have helped people to work together at a local level to achieve great results.”

Community groups and individuals can register to participate in the Low Carbon Diet online on the ClimateSmart Living website www.climatesmart.qld.gov.au.
